Part awareness-through-movement workshop, part trance dance event, and part collective performance, this 4-hour workshop will treat the dance workshop as a potentially ritual space in which the collective experience of joy and transformation may be possible. We will begin with a series of experiential practices, on our own and with partners, designed for developing deep, subtle awareness of mind, breath, and sensation. This will lead us into movement practices that facilitate upsetting habitual ways of moving and thinking, including re–imagining the physical body, through meditation-like prompts, as a site for constant transformation, delight, and revelation.
.
This experiential re-”thinking” will serve as preparation for inducing states of perceptual and kinesthetic disorientation and testing one’s psychic and physical limits through speed, duration, repetition, connection with others, vocalization, and other means. Finally, we will ride the wave of our explorations to move into a spontaneously-created, collective performance in which each participant becomes performer, director, light or costumes designer, audience.
