BASEMENT is a performance event project initiated by Marcela Donato, Thiago Granato and Sandro Amaral that focuses on the sharing between artists and public. The project gives the possibility to the artists invited to share their works and to talk in an intimate context about their artistic practices and priorities. It is an opportunity to open their “basements” and to give visibility to what usually remains unspoken publicly.
In the beginning of the evening, each artist welcomes each spectator individually, for a 10 minutes face-to-face talk. In this context, the artists share processes, ideas and/or methodologies linked to their performances, shown later on in the evening. Parallel to the talks, an on going video selection by the artists is screened, again to facilitate the overview of their research and references for their work. The public has the opportunity to maneuver themselves between these situations and create their own circuit during the event.
The first edition of the project took place in September 2011, in Mica Moca, Wedding-Berlin.

For it’s Agora edition, Basement is inviting the following artists:
ELPIDA ORFANIDOU ”one is almost never”
In “one is almost never”, Elpida will be busy with traditional (initially Greek) songs in tandem with a practice in the mysteries of dance.
FRÉDÉRIC GIES “Album”
In “Album” (Praticable), a project that takes the shape of a performance and of a DVD, Frederic Gies applies song formats to dance: he composed each dance as if he had composed songs. Emotions and autobiographic elements were the soil for composing these dances. In the performance, the dances are displayed like in a concert. The DVD, made in collaboration with Andrea Keiz, is a compilation of videos which contextualize each dance. It is the equivalent of a CD of a music album. It allows dance to enter the spectator’s home. Made with public funding, the DVD is given for free to the spectators after each concert.
